The Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado are the two biggest competitors from the major pickup-truck makers in the US.

I’ve tested three Colorado trucks in different trims and one all-new Ford Ranger.

The Colorado truck eked out a win this time over the Ranger, but the truth is that both pickups are outstanding.

The Ford versus Chevy rivalry is a familiar one to pickup-truck customers. In the full-size segment, the mighty F-150 has been the bestselling vehicle in the US since Ronald Reagan was President, while the Chevy Silverado has usually been number two.

Decades ago, there was robust competition in the compact pickup segment, as well. But more recently, the Detroit automakers have all but abandoned the market in the US.

That all changed when Chevy rolled out the Colorado in 2014. Suddenly, the old compact segment became a midsize battleground (the trucks were larger than the entry-level, stripped-down pickups that I drove when I was in college). Toyota was well-established, but with the Colorado and its GMC sibling, the Canyon, General Motors offered more plush, high-tech, yet still versatile and robust small pickups.

Honda revamped its Ridgeline to be more pickup-like, and just like that Ford looked like it had fallen behind the curve in its bread-and-butter realm.

Not to worry, however, as the Ranger midsize was on sale outside the US, so all the Blue Oval had to do was bring the vehicle back to America. In the first three months of 2019, Ford sold almost 9,500 Rangers, a respectable debut. Colorado sales tallied about 33,500 for the same period.

I personally love midsize pickups. They’re the ideal vehicles for suburban weekend home-improvement duty, and if you’re an outdoorsy person who doesn’t need to tow a large boat or horse trailer, they’re ideal for getting out into nature (as long as you go for the 4×4 versions). When equipped for offroading, they can be comfort-challenged, but you can also opt for a cheaper, rear-wheel-drive base model that’s will provide easier driving dynamics.

Having driven several Colorados in the past four years, coming away impressed with them all, I recently enjoyed the new Ranger – so naturally, it was time to compare pickups. Read on to find out how they matched up.

First up is the newcomer. The 2019 Lariat SuperCrew four-wheel-drive Ranger was nicely equipped and stickered at almost $45,000. The base-price pickup is a little more than $24,000.

The SuperCrew configuration sports a 5-foot bed, but the Ranger can be had with a two-door cab and a 6-foot bed. The Ranger is a handsome pickup, especially in “Lightning Blue.”

The 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine is a turbocharged power plant that cranks out 275 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity is 7,500 pounds — enough to tow just about anything owners of the Ranger would want to.

Ford’s EcoBoost engine tech uses turbocharging to retain power with good fuel-economy. In this case, the truck gets 20 mpg city, 24 highway, and 22 combined. The 0-60 mph run is achieved is about 6.5 seconds.

I put the Ranger to a more serious hauling test than the Colorado, making a run to Costco and loading up some furniture. The bed is big enough to handle these typical suburban tasks, and it could also easily handle mountain bikes and outdoor gear.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel felt premium, and you’ll notice that the cluster presents a speedometer — no traditional tachometer, and that’s fine. Old-school tachs aren’t very useful on pickups.

Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system runs on an 8-inch touchscreen. Sync 3 is one of the best in the industry. It provides superb navigation, easy Bluetooth connectivity, and AUX and USB device-connection options.

The 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system in the Ranger I tested is a terrific extra. It sounds too good for a truck this small! Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available.

On to the Chevy Colorado. I’ve sampled the truck in three trims; here, we see a $43,475 ZR2 that was well equipped and ready for off-road action. But I’ve tested a closer-to-base ($21,300) and an aggressive Z71 version.

The 2018 ZR2 came with a fetching “Cajun Red Tintcoat” paint job. The truck had a crew cab and a “short box” bed. Some folks don’t much like short boxes, but I think for the uses that for most owners, the short box is ideal.

On paper, the 308-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 could be construed as underpowered. But it was anything but in my hands. This pickup has nice pop.

Fuel economy is 17 mpg city/24 highway/19 combined — not great, but also not bad given the oomph provided by the V6.

The Colorado ZR2 can tow up to 5,000 lbs. That’s not massive for a pickup, but the non-performance Colorado and ZR2 aren’t really intended for customers who will be hauling horse trailers. More likely, they’ll attach a small trailer to pull an ATV, some JetSkis, or a modest camper.

The ZR2 has been clocked at a respectable 0-60 mph in 6 seconds, while the Z71 can haul 7,000 lbs.

A smaller, four-cylinder powerplant is also available for the Colorado.

The eight-speed automatic handles the Colorado’s power without straining. Shifts are smooth.

With the Colorado ZR2, you have electronic-locking differentials, front and rear, so the Colorado ZR2 is ready for serious off-roading. The front underbelly and rear transfer case are also shielded, so rock-busting won’t cripple your pickup.

As far as the bed goes, there isn’t much difference between the Colorado and the Ranger. Both trucks should satisfy the hauling needs of midsize buyers.

The Chevy’s “Jet Black” interior is on par with the Ford’s. It’s a nice environment, near-premium without being luxurious. That’s by design. This isn’t a truck that’s meant to be babied, so the interior has to be able to endure some punishment.

The driver gets a pretty typical Chevy setup as far as the steering wheel controls and gauges are concerned. There’s a small info screen between the speedometer and the tachometer.

Beyond heated seats, cruise control, and nicely appointed leather-wrapped steering wheel, you don’t get a lot of driver-assist features with the Colorado.

Bluetooth-device pairing is a snap, and there are USB/AUX options for plugging in gadgets. Like all GM vehicles, the Colorado has 4G LTE WiFi connectivity.

And the winner (for now) is the Chevy Colorado!

To be completely honest, I had the Ranger as my winner when I started this comparison. I drove the Ford more recently than the Colorado and I was extremely impressed. I also tend to think that Ford knows trucks and knows them well, so I give the Blue Oval the benefit of the doubt.

However, with three separate Colorado trims in my backstory – and yet another one coming soon, the ZR2 Bison – I’ve simply spent too much quality seat time in the Chevy. The ZR2, in fact, is one of the best pickups I’ve ever tested, period.

That said, this contest was TIGHT. In the end, I think I favored the ZR2/Z71 V6 engine and the Chevy infotainment system over the Ranger’s four-banger and SYNC 3. But I didn’t favor them by much. In truth, the consumer is officially spoiled for choice in the once-forlorn midsize pickup market, with excellent offerings not just from Ford and Chevy, but also stalwart Toyota with the robust Tacoma, nichey-y Honda and the Ridgeline, Chevy sibling GMC and the Canyon, and even Nissan and the aging Frontier.

When it comes down to Colorado vs. Ranger, you can’t lose. And I’m assuming that Ford is going to offer a more performance-oriented Ranger Raptor to US buyers, as it does in other global markets. So Ranger will match up better with the Colorado line, which has been on sale in the US longer.

If you’re an offroader, the ZR2 is worth a close look. But what about the Z71 package? It does add thousands to the price tag, and when all is said and done, the $42,000 Z71 that I sampled isn’t much cheaper than the top-of-the-line, $43,500 ZR2. If you have plans for your Colorado that might be more on the brash side, and if you don’t mind the menacing appearance, the Z71 trim is at least worth a gander.

The Lariat SuperCrew Ranger I tested was a few thousands bucks more expensive that even the ZR2, but I’d say it was ever-so-slightly better appointed and thus worth the extra cost. The Ranger has also been on sale outside the US for a while, so it’s not as if this is an unproven truck.

There has to be a winner in these comparisons (well, most of the time – I could have declared it a tie). For me, and for now, that’s the Colorado. But the Ranger is already close to being neck-and-neck, so in addition to a good, old-fashioned pickup truck war between Detroit rivals Ford and Chevy in the full-size segment, we now have a compelling undercard bout with midsize pickups.

I think that’s great – and if you’re a buyer, so should you.

GM expands Sierra, Silverado brake-issue recall to 3.4 million trucks in U.S. 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Under pressure from the U.S. federal government, General Motors is recalling roughly 3.46 million big pickup trucks and SUVs Stateside to fix a brake problem.The roughly 300,000 trucks affected in Canada were already recalled this past summer.The recall covers the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2014 through 2018 model years.Also included are the Cadillac Escalade from 2015 to 2017, and the GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban and Tahoe from 2015 through 2018.GM says that as it ages, the pump in the power-assist brakes can put out less vacuum power than needed, increasing stopping distance and the risk of a crash.The recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the problem in November of last year.Dealers will recalibrate the electronic brake control module at no cost to customers. Owners were to be notified starting Sept. 6.NHTSA, the U.S. governments road safety agency, began investigating the problem last year after getting 111 complaints from owners of poor brake performance. At the time the agency had nine reports of crashes that had caused two injuries.GM says the problems occur rarely and mostly at low speeds like driving in parking lots. Chevy previews future SUV styling with FNR-Carryall concept

The concept is the second crossover SUV after the 2019 Blazer to sport Camaro-inspired styling, with elements like the slit-like headlights and large intakes mimicking the designs used on the popular muscle car. According to Chevy, the aggressive, almost muscular look represents the new styling direction for SUVs from the brand. You’ll note the concept also wears the sporty RS badge, which is why it’s been fitted with 22-inch alloys, Brembo brakes, and a vented hood. FNR is an acronym for Chevy’s “Find New Roads” slogan and has been previously used on a pair of concepts unveiled in China. It signifies that the concepts point toward new design themes and technologies the brand is exploring. Chevy fans will recognize the Carryall portion of the name from the original Carryall Suburban launched in 1935. However, the FNR-Carryall is very much a crossover so don’t expect the next generation of the body-on-frame Suburban to resemble the concept. The next Traverse is a more likely bet. The FNR-Carryall measures 196.8 inches in length and features six seats split over three rows. There’s a black interior with a 12-inch digital instrument instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 10-inch touchscreen display in the center stack serving as the infotainment hub. The Camaro inspiration is said to have continued into the cabin in the form of circular air vents with satin chrome and red accents. Kickoff 2019 Painless Performance Top 100 With Cruisin’ the Coast

We’re proud to say the Painless Performance / Street Rodder magazine Top 100 is back again for 2019. As most street rodders know the Top 100 consists of 100 cars chosen at ten different events. The selected cars are given the prestigious decal for the window while each owner will receive a very nice embroidered jacket with the Top 100 logo on the back.

While it may still be 2018, we kick-off our Top 100 every year at the Cruisin’ the Coast event. And so this past weekend we set about finding ten great cars to represent the first event of the series. With 8,444 registered cars this year we had plenty to choose from and traveling through the different towns to find our favorite cars takes some time but as usual we found ten great cars ranging from traditional hot rods to customs and street machines. So check out the first ten cars chosen for 2019 and who knows, with ninety more to find you may just have 2019 decal in your window before the year is out. SRM

John Creveling, Columbia, TN / 1957 Chevrolet Nomad

The Chevy Nomad was basically a factory-born custom so there is little need for heavy mods. A shaved hood, single bar grille and smoothed bumper go a long way to improving on an excellent design. With a Dakota Digital monitored LS motor under the hood, Vintage Air inside and Ridetech coilovers this wagon is built to haul.

James & Donna South, Tuscumbia, AL / 1948 Willys Jeepster

The Willys Jeepster may just be the ultimate beach cruiser. A nicely detailed Chevy 350 and 700-R4 trans replace the flathead four under the hood and the PPG Sunset Bronze suits the square line perfectly while trim pieces and the chassis have been treated to Rhino-liner. Heidts IFS and QA1 shocks smooth out the road and it all rolls on American wheels.

In this day of hammered lids it a stock height roof is a real standout. The proper stance is brought about by a 4-inch dropped axle up front with a Currie rear suspended by Carrera coilovers out back. The traditional approach continues inside with S&W gauges, black leather, Lokar shifter and Vintage Air. Under the hood a tri-power fed 350 Chevy couples to a 350 tranny. It all rolls on American salt flat wheels making for one wildly understated Deuce.

David & Margaret Hickson, Mobile, AL / 1955 Chevrolet Convertible

Get to the beach and we start thinking top down cruisin’. Cruisin’ is easy with a nicely detailed LS1 couple to a 4L60E. Suspension remains basically stock with the addition of sway bars and disc brakes from Summit Racing. Billet Specialty five-spokes add a performance looking, while inside leather bucket seats, Vintage Air and a custom console complete the creature comforts.

Don & Kathy Colliau, Dexter, MI / 1950 Plymouth Suburban

Load up the station wagon and head to the coast! The ride from Michigan to Mississippi was hastened by a 5.7 liter Dodge Hemi under the hood. The super rare two-door wagon body remains relatively stock and rides on Fatman suspension. Inside leather covered buckets and Chrysler air conditioning keep things comfortable. The A580 tranny is shifted by a Challenger shifter and it all rolls on American Racing wheels.

Erwin Worden, New Orleans, LA / 1950 Chevrolet Fleetline

Midnight Blue is the hue; PPG is the paint, although many people walk by believing it’s black. The Chevy Fleetline was sleek in 1950 and shaving the decklid and dropping the stance enhanced the look while a detailed 305-Chevy provides motorvation . Inside ivory and gray covered bucket seats, a custom console, Lokar shifter and Auto Meter gauges complete the package. Mustang II suspension and 17 and 18-inch Coy wheels keep the fastback rolling down the road.

Describing this Merc is like reading a pocket size Rod & Custom. Nosed, decked, rounded hood corners, eleven DeSoto teeth, smoothed bumpers, frenched headlights, Lincoln taillights and a chopped top. Yes, this is a classic custom, and under the hood a 350 crate motor hooks to a 350 turbo tranny. Inside S&W gauges, Vintage Air, and lots of lush leather make this car so comfortable it has been driven coast to coast twice.

David & Anne Nelms, Fitzgerald, GA / 1935 Chevrolet Coupe

That outrageous Candy Red paint glowing in the Mississippi sunshine stopped us in our tracks. Below the beautiful House of Kolor paint we find subtle mods like custom hood sides, frenched taillights and shaved door handles. Inside This all steel coupe is powered by a 350/350 combo and rolls on Heidts Mustang II suspension. Inside linen leather combines with aluminum accents, VDO gauges and a tilt column to make this a great road car.

Ron Westmoreland, Gulf Breeze, FL / 1961 Chevrolet Impala

This ’61 Chevy bubble top may look conservative but there was a lot of work fitting those huge rear tires. The bumpers are painted with a special PPG metallic paint giving the car the feel of a drag car “lightweight”. The side trim has been treated with the same paint. Under the hood a 5.7 LS moves the car quickly while Wilwood brakes slow things down. Inside red interior, Vintage Air, Dakota Digital gauges and a column shift complete this stunning package.

Great cars age well. With that thought we could not resist selecting Boyd’s beater. This coupe was built on his TV show and then driven to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in 2006. The defining feature is the reshaped quarter window and overall craftsmanship. Needed a small tow vehicle/DD - 2018 Equinox 2.0T LT 6-month review

I wanted to make to post/have a discussion because sometimes we tend to lose sight of practicality. The solution to everything is either a miata, 9000 hp V-8 monster, or turbo diesel wagon. When i was shopping for a new vehicle, I struggled a bit because of that mentality. I love to autocross and track my NC, but i was really starting from ground zero here.

Back in June i decided that it was time to finally replace my 2003 Suburban. It was much more vehicle than i needed and I was tired of the maintenance. I had a CEL going on and off for the catalytic converter, the A/C was shot, it needed new tires, the paint was failing, and inspection was due. I frankly never liked the vehicle and just wanted to get rid of it after 3.5 years. (I loved my '94 Suburban that i drove from '06-'12, and up to 190k miles)

I have been driving an NC miata as a DD for 7 years and was ready for a better DD. I never thought i would get a small crossover, but when it was time to put the money on the table, the 2018 Equinox proved to be the best value and compliment to the miata.

In the end I purchased the 2018 Equinox 2.0T LT CPO. I really wanted to get the Cherokee with the larger tow rating, but I didn't like the vehicle. I still am a bit concerned about the longevity and reliability of the 2.0T engine for towing, but the 6-year 100k mile warranty and fuel economy was enough to put me over the hump of buying it.

Since buying it, I've put 10k miles on the Equinox and have average 26.5 mpg. This includes towing a miata (19.5 mpg while doing so), 2 different boats (~16 mpg) and my small jetski (30 mpg)

Some overall thoughts:

Seats:

The seats are nice and comfortable even after a 5+ hour car trip, but they aren't great. I do prefer the seats in some of the other vehicles. I feel like i could sit in the seats of the previous generation Equinox, or my father's SRX much longer. At 5'9 and 200 lbs these work well for me, but because the new seats are small with minimal thigh support, taller drivers may not like them after long drives.

Tech:

This is my first time owning a vehicle with any type of modern tech. I like the layout of MyLink. It's responsive and intuitive. It's definitely a pleasure to use when compared to the Dodge or Jeep system.

When using Android Auto, and I don't know if this is the phone or the car, sometimes the voice texting feature will switch it's language into what i'm assuming is Chinese :dunno:. The voice prompts are a bit slower than i would like.

Driving:

As weird as it sounds to say this about a crossover, driving the vehicle is what really sold me. It feels surprisingly nimble and peppy when compared to the other vehicles that could actually meet the tow rating requirement. It's efficient enough and I find myself driving the vehicle way more than I expected.\

The 9-speed transmission is fantastic. It's extremely smooth, fast, and doesn't hunt gears. I always have power, and half the time I completely forget that the transmission is even there. Now yes, if you smash the gas pedal and it drops 3 gears there is a noticeable delay, but not more so than what I would expect.

FWD/AWD. Most of the time I drive the vehicle in FWD only mode with the clutch detached. However, in snowy conditions and AWD mode the car will send enough power to the rear end to kick it out.

Fuel Economy:

The vehicle is very sensitive to city driving and high speeds. That's to be expected with any crossover, but i was surprised to see that I would struggle to get 22 mpg in real city driving. The difference in highway driving from 65 mph to 75 mph is 4-5 mpg (32mpg down to around 28mpg)

Final Thoughts:

Yes the Equinox is a crossover, and yes it is a compromise vehicle. But, I'm amazed that something in this package could meet my needs. I can tow a car, boat, load it up at Home Depot, go skiing with 3 other people, and still manage to easily park it in Boston and at my house.

2019 GMC Yukon Denali review: Steady as she goes

While much of America goes crazy for car-based, more fuel-efficient crossovers, there are still plenty of people who need something more. Whether it’s for towing, carrying loads of people or just because you like the feeling of something trucky, there’s nothing quite like the capability of a full-size SUV.

At 19 feet long, the Yukon Denali XL is best kept off of tight city streets.

Enter the 2019 GMC Yukon, currently going grille-to-massive-grille with the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada and Toyota Land Cruiser. The Denali trim tested here ups the luxe a bit, giving the Yukon enough amenities to stand tall with the Lexus LX 570, Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX80, not to mention the Cadillac Escalade, with which the GMC shares a platform.

Go big or go home

Now in the fourth year of its fourth generation, the Yukon is available in SLE and SLT trims, with a 5.3-liter V8 under the hood. The Yukon offers seating for seven, eight or even nine passengers, depending on configuration (the base SLE can be had with a front bench seat). Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is optional.

And then there’s my tester, the ne plus ultra Denali XL. This luxury-focused version comes exclusively with a 6.2-liter V8, seating for seven and four-wheel drive. The XL model is a full 20 inches longer than a standard Yukon, measuring a sizable 19 feet in overall length. The good news here is the XL affords you hella cargo space. The bad news, of course, is that this big boy is a chore to drive in congested cities.

Huge inside, but could be nicer

Thankfully, the Denali’s cabin is quiet, spacious and comfortable, though it’s starting to feel a little outdated. This most-loaded Yukon gets leather-trimmed, heated and cooled seats (for both front- and second-row passengers), but they lack the massage function of both the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator.

The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system looks a little small in the GMC’s expansive cabin. It runs GMC’s incredibly straightforward Intellilink software, with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard. Now that the latest version of Apple iOS brings Google Maps to CarPlay, something that was already available on Android Auto, I recommend just using this interface instead of Intellilink. It’s easier to get navigation directions right onto the touchscreen, avoiding GMC’s sometimes laggy system.

Wireless charging is standard in the Yukon Denali, as is a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot for up to seven devices. Keeping things charged should be pretty easy, with two USB ports and a 12-volt outlet up front, plus 110- and 12-volt outlets for second-row passengers and an additional 12-volt outlet in the way-back. Add the optional rear-seat entertainment package and the second row gets an HDMI port, two USB ports, wireless headphones and even wireless projection. Or, you can just kick it old school (relatively speaking) and play DVDs on the pair of 9-inch displays.

The Yukon’s second-row seats flip forward with the touch of a button, so it’s easy to get in and out of the third row. Once back there, you’ll find a respectable amount of legroom — of course, I’d expect nothing less in a vehicle of this size.

Where the Denali XL truly excels is in its ability to haul your cargo. You’ve got over 39 cubic feet of space behind the third row, expanding to nearly 95 cubic feet with both back rows folded. The Ford Expedition Max, meanwhile, offers 34.3 and 73.3 cubic feet, respectively. However, and somewhat oddly, the Yukon’s almost-identical twin, the Cadillac Escalade, offers 121.7 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats folded.

Lots of power, nice to drive

As I mentioned, the Yukon Denali only comes with GM’s 6.2-liter V8, good for 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The Yukon comes standard with GM’s excellent Magnetic Ride Control, which can adjust the suspension electronically at all four corners, as well as actively reduce body roll. No, it doesn’t turn this nearly 6,000-pound beast into a corner-carver, but it does allow for a smooth, controlled ride. Magnetic Ride Control is probably the best thing about the Yukon.

A 10-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, but doesn’t do much to help quench the Yukon’s thirst for fuel. During my week of testing, I only saw 13.2 miles per gallon, well short of the EPA’s combined rating of 16 mpg. The Yukon is officially rated at 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, which bests both the Infiniti QX80 and Lexus LX 570, but the Lincoln Navigator is the most fuel-efficient of the large-and-in-charge SUVs, with 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.

Two-wheel-drive Yukon Denalis can tow 8,400 pounds, though this XL with four-wheel drive reduces that number to a still-plenty-useful 7,900. Regardless, the Yukon comes with a 2-inch receiver hitch and both four- and seven-pin wiring harnesses. An optional trailering package includes an integrated trailer brake and automatically leveling rear suspension, but I wish it had the awesome Pro Trailer Backup Assist of the Ford Expedition.

Other standard tech goodies include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control. Unfortunately, the ACC won’t engage below 15 miles per hour and automatically shuts off below 10 mph, making it useless in heavy stop-and-go, rush-hour traffic. Other manufacturers offer full-range adaptive cruise control. GMC’s system could really use an update.

Worth the money?

For my money, I’d skip the XL and just go for the regular Yukon Denali. Features like the aforementioned Magnetic Ride Control, a head-up display and active noise cancellation are all standard at a $66,200 price point. I could pony up $8,000 to get the Denali Ultimate Package that adds things like power-retracting steps for easier ingress and egress, but that’s a lot of money. Instead, I’ll jump out the door with a lightly optioned Yukon Denali that costs just $69,600, including $1,295 for destination. A far cry from the $82,190 of the test car you see here.

That said, if you’re dead set on something in the GM family, the Cadillac Escalade offers the same engine and driving dynamics, but feels nicer inside. Or, save some coin and just get a Chevy Tahoe or Suburban. Good and useful as the 2018 Yukon is, it’s hard to recommend it when newer offerings like the Expedition and Navigator are so much more refined.
